As Far, as Exile is a project by Hong Kong artist Loretta Lau, initiated months before her return to her homeland on November, 2022, fully aware of the risks she might face in Hong Kong. Six veteran Czech artists are involved in this collaboration, born between 1941 and 1966: Pavel Baňka, Jindra Viková, Kamila Ženatá, Pavel Opočenský, Jan Silar, and Marie Šeborová.
Digitial Bookletuncovering the stories of a generation shaped by political turmoil, exile, and resistance. Their perspectives, born of personal and collective histories, are brought together here to reflect on the universal themes of displacement, resilience, and the fight for freedom.
Lau’s own work, rooted in the ongoing struggle for freedom in Hong Kong, engages directly with the artists’ experiences, finding common ground between historical Czech normalisation period, resistance and contemporary movements for justice in her stays in the Czech Republic from 2018-2022. In this project, art becomes a bridge—connecting past and present, East and West, personal memory and collective experience. Hungarian artist KristofLab joins them, echoing themes of freedom and humanity in his local practice.
As Far, as Exile is asking: What does it mean to be exiled, to resist, and to find one’s identity in a world that seeks to define you? This exhibition is not just a conversation across generations, but across borders, a testament to the power of solidarity in the face of oppression.
